It is red grit like tennis turf. See those others falling down the slope of the edge of the old crater?

We had now left the Gully Trail to join the Summit Trail which is a Class 4 12 km (return) trail to the summit.

We only walked to the first false ridge as Cameron was not that keen.

A very friendly local clearing the Chemin de Stevenson (GR 70 Robert Louis Stevenson Trail) diversion just outside of L’Estampe to make it safer for walkers. However, safety standards didn’t apply to the gentleman it would seem.
