Ok. So I'm so totally not a photojournalist of any kind, but I thought I'd see how me and the X10 would do at a local protest. Took some time out at lunch and grabbed a few shots. I found it very intriguing and really kind of a rush, even though the protest turned out pretty small. At the beginning it seemed like there were more photogs and tv news than protesters, but the crowd grew a bit after that. It was a pretty cold winter like spring day. Snowing even.

Info on the protest can be found on the flickr page for them for anyone interested in more context. Not really interested in any big political debate or anything so going to keep my personal opinions to the side. I was just interested in seeing what it's like to document something like this, rather than family, artsy or travel shots.

Anyone else try this? Let's see them.

Great shots, Pav. Especially #1 shows the passion of the protester.
I'm afraid that protests are a bit duller here. Just people standing with protest signs at the Binnenhof (where the prime minister and administration meet and work).

I also like the passion in the first picture-but it would be even better if the viewer could read whats on the sign the guy on the left is holding.

Recendly i saw a series of Detroid pictures-of abandoned houses and even abandoned skyscrapers. Are those in a save area where you can take pictures? I would be interested in a series of those showing the view of the local people.

Yeah, the sign's a bit cutoff, but the gist of it is there. Emergency manager =NO! Really though, it was a pretty small protest. Getting in close doesn't show the size of it, which is something I look for now when seeing protest coverage in the news.

As for abandoned building and burnt out houses, there's plenty of that to go around. A lot of stuff like this. Although I don't have too many pics of the decay.

The area I shot the protest in is Downtown. Most of the decay is in the immediate surrounding suburbs. The most photographed one seems to be the old train station. Everyone seems to have shots of this great old building, now standing derelict and decayed.

Here's a cool site from a local with much better shots that I have.

Thought that I'd resurrect this old thread with old photos from the Occupy Wall Street protests:

I've got a decade or more of protest photos, documenting events in and around me. As per site rules though, I won't be commenting on the politics behind the photos.

March For Our Lives - Dallas / Fort Worth, Texas - March 24, 2018

On March 24, 2018, hundreds of student-led demonstrations around the world were held in support of tighter gun control laws. The world-wide protests were in response to the February 14 mass shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, in which 17 students and faculty members were killed and 17 others wounded.

The size of the crowd in Fort Worth was estimated at 8,000. The size of the crowd in Dallas was estimated at 15-20,000.

If anyone is interested, there are many more photos of this event on my website.

The rules have changed somewhat where I am. I mean, it's a free country, you can protest. Except you can't. Well, you can - if you get permission. But if you don't get permission, then you can't. But if you do get permission then it's only allowed to be at a set place and time. Got all that? If you have, then what this all means is that protests, per these rules, often end up in back streets, unheard and unseen. Just happened to be walking down such a back street when I came across this, I have no idea what the protest was about and I'm pretty sure nor did 99% of the area. Which I'm guessing is probably the intention, out of sight, out of mind. It's not hard to break these rules and the police have had lots of their time taken up arresting such breakers of this new law. These laws might work with a protest such as this, but where it relates to, say, a local issue at the behest of the local community? I can see this policy breaking before too long.

can you please tell us a bit of background to these images? Without context, it's hard to understand what I'm looking at. I am in South Africa and far removed from wherever this is taking place, but would like to know
(I'll try not to violate the "no politics" forum rule in my response)

It's the last political rally for one of the US presidential candidates. The rally was in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in a critical state for both candidates.

Thank you for providing some information. It makes all the difference to putting current news on the radio into perspective by seeing actual images.
