In '72 I bought a '68 1600 with only 25k miles on it. Kept it for 9 yrs and sold it for $100 less than I paid for it originally and after putting 113k more miles on it too. I did a lot of traveling in that little car.

Yup, I liked my car too. I believe I bought it and sold it for the same amount. We had our 2nd kid and the 2002 was our backup family car. I could not install a rear-facing child seat in that car, so had to replace it. Got a 1991 BMW 318i to replace it which I think was basically the ultimate iteration of that formula by BMW - it was actually a pretty rare car as it was a 1 year only of the 4 door body with a modern 4 cylinder, twin-cam engine (earlier 318i versions of that chassis had the old BMW 2002 engine which was outdated when that chassis came out).

They started to get bigger and cheaper in build from 1992 and later (next generation of that car) - so I still wish I had that little car. Unfortunately, someone in a van ran into the rear of it when I was standing at a red light and it was a goner.

I thought they'd total mine when I had a head-on collision with some loggers in a pickup truck who were going home after a long day. It was on a one lane driveway into the vineyard I was living on at the time. I'd just been to town and bought a new stereo for it. Lucky for me the stereo shop went against their no return policy and I was able to take the stereo back. A week later my back seized up and I couldn't even get out of bed. The car was fixed after about 6 weeks or so. I sold it shortly after getting married as my new wife found the 'Teutonic' flavor of the stick shift not to her liking, but she could drive our new Honda Accord hatchback no problem. I knew BMW was in real trouble after buying the Honda. All the fun of the 1600 but with the lightness in the controls that the Bimmer just couldn't touch.
