Fer-de-lance is an appellation applied to several species of snakes. This is a golden lancehead viper or scientific name of bothrops asper. it was probably about 3 years old and about 3 feet long. When we first encountered it, it was slithering towards the stream that we were standing in, but stopped when we saw it and started shining our lights on it. Eventually it coiled up and stayed put, probably waiting for prey to come along some day. Vipers can wait several days for prey to come by.

For size reference, this guy is sitting on a groove between sections of sidewalk. About a half mile away is a pond with a lot of much bigger ones. They come up into the neighborhood to lay their eggs. This one seems a bit far away.

A big, beauty of a male basilisk. These are the lizards that run on water, but this boy is probably too big to do that. We did see a few of these run across water in Panama. What an experience!
