Beginning the climb to Strete

This is the A379 at the north end of Slapton Line. to the right of the photographer are the grounds of a house converted from an old stable block. In the 1800's when this route was covered by horse drawn stage coach two extra horses were put on at this point to make a team of 6 to pull the coach up the hill from sea level to Strete at 400 feet above sea level (it's about 1 mile to Strete). The old road didn't actually follow this line but went up the side of the hill and cliff face and was quite a bit steeper, this route incorporates a hairpin bend to ease the slope.
The bus makes relatively light work of the current incline.
