We are a town devoted to maritime work. Fishing and crabbing are big and we have the Columbia River Bar pilots who bring ship across the very dangerous Columbia River Bar (The Graveyard of the Pacific) and we also have the Columbia River Pilots who can guide your ship to the navigable headwaters of the Columbia. (Columbia River - Wikipedia). With all this water activity here in Astoria, the county seat for Clatsop County, it is not very surprising that the county junior college has maritime studies. Here is their boat on which their cadets train.
FWIW, for all you salmon fanciers when I first moved here a whole, fresh caught and cleaned salmon was US$20 dockside from the boat. Folks here are not too keen on salmon. They have eaten about all they want by the time they are old enough to vote. It is the last eaten dish in a pot luck. Can you believe that? It is true. I have seen it more than once. Dungeness crab and Willapa Bay oysters are popular. Our local pan fried Willapa oysters are rightly famous. With deep fried onion rings and coleslaw it is a perfectly balanced meal. LOL
