U-505-forward%20torpedo%20room-X2.jpg

I ran across this the other day and thought it would be fun to post. It is an old (25+ years), recently scanned, photo of the interior (forward torpedo room) of the German U-boat, U-505, which is on exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. It is a fascinating experience to tour it; many of you who have been to Chicago have probably seen it.
FYI: Here is link to Wikipedia's account of it: German submarine U-505 - Wikipedia

Two crew off the Muir Milach, a hake trawler moored in the West Mooring Basin. Picking up gear at the chandlery in the morning and then off to homeport in Seattle. The fellow in the red sweatshirt says that other than a one week break they have been out since June. They are paying homage to Mark Twain who said, "A woman's a woman but a cigar is a good smoke."

Curiosity led me to a Google search of this vessel which led to some images, a link to their new engines back in 2015 and then something I did not know existed but I guess I should have, a site that tracks vessels. Here is the link.

Yes, I know this site. I use MarineTraffic which does the same thing. It is on my phone and is fun. In a port like Astoria, even though it is a small one, these apps are useful and fun. My house's back door looks down onto the harbor ( Christmas Eve in Astoria, snow. Leica M8.2, Voigtländer 35mm f/1.4, Nokton Classic II, f/1.4) and the app is useful in identifying what is docked and what is passing. All Columbia River traffic passes my door and is a sure sign of how the economy is doing. Lots of laden hulls means the times are good.
