Until you add a shed load of EVs on charge.....
Agree, Ian.

We have an 8.1 kW solar system, which runs all our pool equipment, airconditioners, and almost everything else. A lot of this equipment has changed over the last 4 years too, as has our usage.

Leaving aside the dramatic increase in the cost of electricity, it has just about paid for itself in four years.

It's too much trouble to do a spreadsheet with all the one and offs, but our average daily usage of Mains electricity has dropped from about 24 kWh/day down to around 8 kWh/day, a huge saving. Some quarters, we get a negative bill.

Last December I used a total of 31 units from the grid.

Struth, Ian!

That sounds like my brother and sister in law's household.

We helped them buy a 12 kW solar system in 2023 by gifting them half their out of pocket costs. Their system is going gangbusters, with a negative bill last December. They live in SE Queensland, so airconditioners run pretty much 24/7 in the hot, humid season.

They (actually my Sil, as my brother died from a brain tumour last August) have now been able to replace their really ancient airconditioners (25+ y.o. compressor types) with modern heat pump types, which has also significantly reduced their consumption.

We replaced our 27 y.o. r/c airconditioners (Fujitsu heat pump units) with new, bigger Fujitsu units. They use about half the power of the old ones! Better compressors and more efficient refrigerant gas.
