Oh, they do - but this is how the usually mark the pedestrian path ... (old-fashioned and no longer politically entirely correct, but there you go).Don't they draw round you with chalk in Switzerland?
(And for the record, I basically got the joke, but I actually found the way the patch in the road was applied to be rather cynical in nature ...)
