Sigma Sigma DP Series Image Thread

This sort of disproves the idea that the camera is unusable above 400 iso, which I've heard mentioned a lot; at least in monochrome at reasonable sizes, it looks like it does well.

The more I see, the more this camera is calling to me.

Wow Andy, that's some great shooting! I particularly like 3 and 4 also, but I'd be happy with any of them.

Thanks very much Ray and everyone else for your kind comments. I am SO impressed with these cameras that I am selling my full frame Canon DSLR so the DP's will be my main 'goto' cameras. I'll prob add a M4/3 camera for those ZOOM moments!

As everyone has been so nice here a re a few more from the trip.

Lawrence's post had me thinking about potential owners of the DP series that are holding back because they think that the camera is useless in situations that call for high ISO. While it's no match for modern Bayer and X-Trans sensors above base ISO, I want to make it clear that it is possible to take photos in a poorly lit pub, often with fantastic results. For many, these are the photos you cherish the most and there's no need to leave the Merrill at home when going out to meet some friends. The first photo was shot at ISO2500 and the rest are at ISO3200, all converted using SPP's monochrome mode (all wide open at f/2.8). There's no need for reasonable sizes. Click on the images for full-size photos and see the wonderful grain.

This camera is definitely in my future. I'll have to wait a month or two to move on it, though, as a family emergency is going to require a trip back home to Boston in the next day or two.

I'm increasingly impressed with the results from the Merrill (DP2M in my case).

I'd be really tempted by the Sigmas if it wasn't such a chore to realize the full potential. I really like the X100's jpegs because getting really, really nice photos without necessarily having to process raw files saves me a LOT of time (on the Samsung EX1 I often have to process the raw file if I want a really impressive result, and it costs me time I just don't have at the moment - and it's near-impossible to do on the move unless you bring a laptop with you).

The 3 B&W images above are Jpg's not RAW. In most situations JPG's are just fine but I did loose a couple images where the exposure of the ground was a wee bit too dark and the white clouds were almost totally blown out. For outdoor stuff or tricky exposure situations you really have to shoot RAW.

Andy, I didn't know you shoot many JPEGs. I had heard that the Merrills had a much better JPEG engine, but I haven't been brave enough to try it. The previous Foveons had dreadful JPEGs and it's ingrained in me to always shoot RAW. The problem, as Bart mentioned, are the massive RAW files. Sigma was kind enough to provide an extra battery with the DP Merrills but perhaps Sigma will include this when a full frame Foveon is released.

I only shot in Jpg by accident, I do normally shoot in Raw.
