Help Signatures - why aren't links or formatting allowed?

As per title really. I notice that signatures here are limited to three lines and you cannot use formatting or have URL links in them. Is there a reason?

Since I *can* both use formatting and links, I guess it's either a status thing (post related) or, more likely (as far as I recall, it's not restricted), something to do with the browser used ...

Formatting and links seem to be a Supporter feature, I was only able to add the link to my portfolio once I became a supporter.
