SiJ 2018 - we made it! Thinking back - and ahead ...

Should we adapt the "Single in" challenge to be more accessable or keep it pure and simple?

  • I would like to keep the SiJ challenge as it is - yearly, in January, period.

  • I would prefer a nine-month pattern in order to get variation in subject matter.

  • The "Single" aspect is to be held up: one camera, one lens, preferrably a prime.

I'm not sure what I will do. In or out, I am undecided. I could probably use my Ricoh GRD3, or my X100... But I wont be using a Pentax with a prime, or a Nikon1 with a prime (unless I cave in and get a J5 in the meantime which at this stage is not very likely). There's always an iphone, of course.

I find it amazing that the SIJ participants are already thinking about the next challenge. I remember being almost mentally shot after getting through the month. You've obviously all enjoyed yourselves!

I was, too, after the last couple of "single in..." challenges. Using the P610 let me sail through easily. Its a camera I bonded with fairly quickly and even now learn new things about and with it. I struggled in the past, even with the LX100 which I used last year.

Already looking forward to October. Which camera will probably be decided by what I replace my dead Canon EOS M with and also if I'm on holiday at all that month.

I wouldn't say I was mentally shot but it was certainly strange getting up after the 31 days of SiJ and I hadn't got to think about what or how I was going to get that days picture. Felt quite lost in a way.

After a bit of a rough start I ended up having a fat time using the O45 f/1.8 for the month...

I thought it would be very restrictive using a 90mm effective focal length but once I got into it I realised that they're actually pretty versatile. I was doing landscapes, inside shots, close ups with nice creamy bokeh... The subject isolation is pretty damn good!

I don't do commitment, certainly not on gear to be used, although I would hope to take part. The gear will very much depend on what particular genre, if any, I might want to cover during the month and that is likely to be a last minute decision.

I won't commit to gear either. In nine months I'm not sure what I'll have.

I was thinking I'd use my GX85, but it died on me over the weekend. Don't know if the battery is bad, the charger, or the camera. It seemed to charge fine, but the camera doesn't respond in any way. It still is under a used camera warranty, and I hope to find out today how to proceed.

I'm not yet sure what I'll use - but my setup is most probably evolve around a single prime again, which sort of suggests the Sony A7 II; I may even use an adapted lens for the challenge this time.

But there's still a totally different approach: the GF1 with 20mm f/1.7 ...

@tonyturley I sure hope you get the GX85 fixed - it's really a fine camera, and well suited for a "Si" challenge ...
