Single In Single in November (SiN) 2024 - announcement

Start Date

End Date

The Single in November 2024 (SiN 24) challenge is coming up!

What it's all about:
  • One camera!*
  • One lens!*
  • One month!
  • One image per day!
*Or one compact camera, of course!

The key rules and considerations:
  • Take at least one image per day during one month - and post (only!) one image to each day's thread. It's desirable to post the image on the very day it was taken to get into the groove and keep up the flow.
  • Specify the gear you're going to use for the whole challenge beforehand - and stick with it if at all possible. You may even try to shoot your chosen setup exclusively for the whole month - however, you should only try this if you're sure you can make it.
  • Personal restrictions and additional demands you set up for yourself may help boost your creativity. A word to the wise, though: Don't put too much pressure on yourself - it'll probably hurt rather than help.
  • Interact with other participants, talk about the images you take and see as well as your own experiences during the challenge - in short, let's talk, have fun together and support each other.
There will be daily treads, an outtakes thread every eight days and a discussion thread for exchange and support.

For those concerned: We're carrying on with the "Today" challenge as usual.

We're keeping up our seven-month cycle for the "Single in" challenges. For more on that, see this post. The next "Single in" will be in June 2025.

Your host,
Matt

I posted this just after Christmas last year about a load of old gear given to me as a present.
The only lens I haven't really used out of that lot is the OM Zuiko mount Tamron 70mm-150mm macro zoom and the reason for that to be honest is because I haven't really fancied it. But it's only right that I give this thing a real go and this SIN challenge seems a good as any way to spend some time with the lens, so that's what I'm going to do. I did this challenge years ago with Nikon's worst ever lens and FWIW I was very happy with the images, so time to be positive!

After going back and forth a couple of days, I suddenly knew what would present a true challenge. Not one of my current favourites or most cherished cameras, of course, but a little camera I've now owned for almost a year without really trying to make it work for me: my late father's Canon IXUS 220 HS. Back in the day, he had asked me for a recommendation and bought the camera upon my suggestion.

This tiny camera came out in 2011; it was also sold as the PowerShot ELPH 300 HS in other parts of the world. It has a 1/2.3" 12MP BSI-CMOS sensor and got some good reviews back in the day. Or course, it appears ridiculously outdated - but actually, the OM System TG-7 I looked up earlier today sports a very similar sensor. The IXUS 220 HS is acutally quite interesting on paper: 24-120mm-e lens, f/2.7 aperture at the wide end (though a less impressive f/5.9 at tele), very close minimum focusing distance, a sturdy, nicely textured body ...

It's extremely small - only a couple of millimeters taller than my own super-cheap Canon compact, the IXUS 132 you see in the back, but even thinner. The IXUS 132 sports a bigger range at 28-224mm-e and sports a (cheaper, but also - to me - more interersting) 16MP CCD sensor, but it's clearly the less refined camera.

My mother wanted me to take the IXUS 220 HS with me when I first visited her again after my father's funeral (we live in different countries) - roughly a year ago. I'll use SiN 24 to familiarize myself with the camera - and to remember, occasionally ...

EDIT: Superseded - but I'll leave the post in because it tells the story behind my initial thoughts.

Tim, I hope I got the camera right ...

I just bought a "new" Kodak C653 to give my granddaughter on her 5th birthday on Pearl Harbor Day. This was my first digital camera and I used it extensively for three years or so. Limited, but those old Kodak colors are nice, specially if autumn cooperates. Plus it fits easily into one of my cargo pants pockets so it should always be handy.

I'm likely out this go around, will be missing a quarter of the month or more. Between a handful of doc appointments, a surgery with a couple nights in a hotel and the hospital, and travel back-and-forth to Tucson multiple times... I'll be not hauling a camera around for at least 7 days, likely more.

First off, thanks to Matt for taking the time to organize this challenge.

I’m in. I have been bad and been away, obsessed by my astrophotography for the last six months. So this will be a welcome opportunity to re-connect with everyone and return to things terrestrial (kind of). Spouse and I will be traveling at least three weeks of November including a cruise across the Atlantic (expect lots of photos of booze, clouds, and water). But that should provide plenty of opportunity for new perspectives on stuff.

Nikon Df and Nikkor 24mm f/2.8D

Your contributions will be missed, Gordon.

I'm definitely in, but camera+lens TBD... though I'm currently leaning towards the ultra-pocketable little Fuji XF10
