Single In Single in September (SiS) 2023 - announcement

End Date

The Single in September 2023 (SiS 23) challenge is coming!

What it's all about:
  • One camera!
  • One lens!
  • One month!
  • One image per day!
The key rules and considerations:
  • Take at least one image per day during one month - and post (only!) one image to each day's thread. It's desirable to post the image on the very day it was taken to get into the groove and keep up the flow.
  • Specify the gear you're going to use for the whole challenge beforehand - and stick with it. You may even try to shoot your chosen setup exclusively for the whole month - however, you should only try this if you're sure you can make it.
  • Personal restrictions and additional demands you set up for yourself may help boost your creativity. A word to the wise, though: If you put too much pressure on yourself, it'll probably hurt rather than help.
  • Interact with other participants, talk about the images you take and see as well as your own experiences related (or unrelated) to the challenge - in short, let's talk, have fun together and support each other.
There will be daily treads, an outtakes thread every eight days and a discussion thread for exchange and support.

For those concerned: We're carrying on with the "Today" challenge as well, as per usual.

N.B. We're on a seven-month cycle; for more on that, see this post. So, the next "Single in" will be run in April 2024.

Your host,
Matt

In, like Flynn. :)

Pentax K-3III Monochrome with the HD DA Limited 21/3.2 (currently my only prime setup, didn't like using a zoom last time). Will be using other gear for other stuff for September.

Matt - thanks for once again herding the cats.
21*1.5 for APS-C? 31mm? That should be quite sweet on a K3III Monochrome. As if I need more temptation. Good thing I'm too broke to get that combination! I like the thought of the Pentax 31mm f1.8 Limited too. Do you have it? How does it look on the Monochrome?

I really don't need to get into the Pentax ecosystem being really invested in Leica and Nikon. But what I've seen of the K3III M is really delicious so if I ever do, seriously, end up buying into that camp as well, that will probably be why :D

Yeah, the 21 is a good general purpose lens on APS-C. Not as small as the 40 Limited pancake, but still small and light. I had the 31mm in the past, with the original K-1. Currently doing some thinking on future lenses other than the 2 zooms I also use (16-85 and 60-250). I love the Limiteds, great size, build quality, decent optics (maybe not perfect for the digital world but pleasing images), but some of the FoVs don't gel with me on APS-C.

edit - why not, setup for the month.

Dang, something about seeing that orange filter behind the ridiculously cool rectangular filter opening really gets me going. That setup looks truly sweet.

I'd like to be in, however the only gear I have right now that would be a good fit for the challenge would be the K-1 II with the 31mm Limited, which is a pretty heavy setup to lug around on weekdays - so my shots might have to be made in the evenings after work. I'm not sure I want to do that. I'll think on it for a bit. The easier choice would be the GRIIIx but it's not a challenge anymore to shoot with in any aspect, so doesn't feel true to the spirit of the single in.

Well, by the end of the month you might not notice the weight anymore...

:hiding:

I'm planning to start the SiS using a Lumix G100 camera with the Sigma 56mm f1.4 lens. Middle of the month I have some surgery scheduled with several days in the hospital and several weeks of recovery at home. I hope I can complete the whole challenge, but we'll see.
Good luck with your surgery - I hope the results will be all you wish for. We await several portraits of your big toe, while you recuperate

My problem is this : I need a fairly small lightweight and inconspicuous rig for everyday walkarounds, due to crazy safety and security concerns here.
So nothing exotic, unusual or expensive. To give an example : always in my daily bag is a Fuji X-T20 with 27mm (old original) pancake. Under the radar.

I can't deviate too much from that for daily challenge images, since it's simply not feasible. Hence the conundrum I hope you will appreciate.

I know exactly what you mean. It’s two daily images so you really need to use the same camera/lens combo.

There's no reason not to use the "Single in" combo for daily images anyway - and portability is a huge plus. That said, I've carried all sorts of combos, up to a Z 7 II with Z 105mm f/2.8 S (a really big lens - gorgeous results, though). It's just a matter of accepting the consequences ...

Irene, I actually think your usual combo is ideal for a "Single in" - but the point I see is that it's hardly a challenge for you to use since you're so used to it. That's not a problem in itself, but something that's kind of atypical for these challenges - people often make themselves use difficult or challenging setups in order to get to the bottom of something. That said, we've seen a number of GR III and GR IIIx - it's the quintessential EDC camera. So, all good - if a different choice might make you uncomfortable in any way, I'd stick with what you feel you can carry wherever you go. I get Andrew's statement, and I always make things kind of difficult for myself, too, but that's not mandatory.

M.
