Single In Single in September (SiS) 2023 - outtakes day 1-5

"Gestation" sculpture at the top of the Queen Street Mall

I think that I am going to gave to fiddle around with HDR, or else accept that I'll lose definition in the shadows.

"The Lion" outside the City Hall

Over-exposed once again. I am going to have to get out of the post processing mindset of exposing to minimise blown highlights and black shadows, knowing that I can bring the two together in post processing. In generating a JPEG file, all that matters is how it appears on the screen.

Strong colours, minimalist composition. I really love doing this kind of stuff, and was really on the verge of letting this one be my image for today, but the shrooms seemed more appropriate. Also I feared that if I posted this as the first official participating image that it would've set my own expectations for this challenge in a corridor too tight.

As anyone who's seen my work knows, I like old buildings, barns, trees & the occasional wildflowers. These, especially the old school house, but the barn too, were big contenders once I got home but the yellow of the flowers won out in the end.

I have two, the first one is not really an outtake, more of a very short lived trial of the screw on 1.7TC which I havent tried. It was bought for the first Oly 45 f:1.8 I bought, but never used on that, nor any of the others that has followed. On the 45, it would bring that up to 76,5mm on the 17mm it ideally would bring it to 28ish mm, but as I expected, it is not a very workable solution, even running it at 1x1, it is nowhere close to a workable solution. Fun to try, though and it will be interesting to try it on the long end of the 12-50 somewhere down the road:

The second one is from the improvised "industrial" shot and the direct competitor to what I posted in the main tread:

Very little post done on this, just LR auto noise reduction, the one click "let LR sort it out automated development" and a nudge of extra contrast.

Outtakes Day 2:

I thought that this looked quite interesting when I took it, but on review it is just plain boring. If I was post processing, I would crop to something like 16:9 to crop out the bottom of the bins.

Dead Blooms:

I should have zoomed in closer to get rid of the dead zone on the right and move the focus to the dead blooms and the lower part of the bush. Over exposed too. I should have wound back the compensation further.

Dreary day.

Stuff. Other than the DVD, the rest was a need (stuff that gets used up and has to be replaced) vs want, and cost over 220 USD. Ouch. Still have to get more supplies and food at a couple different stores over the next few days. Ouch x 2.

End of an era.

Both my wife's parents passed a year ago, within a few months of each other (age 89 and 92). For the last year we've been gradually emptying out their home and trying to wrap up their estate. Final cleaning of the house happened today, and it will be listed for sale next week. I took this looking across the living room during what will probably be one of my last visits there. This turned out not quite as I'd envisioned it, so I may play with this on another day this month, if I'm back in this space.

I liked the 'shrooms a quite a bit too, as well ... but I have to say this photograph is quite remarkable and if we had the chance to do retrospective voting, I would have voted for you to make this one your official Day 1 entry. It's such an interesting image, for so many reasons. I'm really glad you posted it in the Outtakes thread.
