Starting Over - a kind of PAD for January

Taken in Florida at Blue Springs National Park probably only a couple of months after getting into photography.

I kind of think I like my first processing better though. haha
I'm a sucker for color - like them both, but prefer the second.

I like it, makes it a more interesting photo.

Woody, exactly my thought as well. I joined our local camera club in September and the speaker at the first meeting showed her photographic work, including one of two children using the same effect, which really suited the subject. I thought that this original would be improved by applying this technique.

I should look and see if there's a photography club here. But I highly doubt it as I don't live in that big of a town. Only about 11,000 people I think and being mostly farmland around here I think I'd be surprised to find one. But I'm always looking to improve on my skill and learn new stuff. It's funny how that changes when you get older. haha I could care less about learning a lot of things when I was in high school but now I love learning new things.

There are 3- 4 clubs near me

I'm sure I could learn lots but I still hesitate - scared of the commitment is part of it

This site is a pretty good learning club as it is

Henry has 2,500 people and we're trying to get a club started. Some of the farmers are also very interested in County Fair/ 4 H and adult 'rodeo' type horsemanship, and Thursday a highschool kid gave a great presentation on long exposures, including steel wool burning and star trails. His folks farm. So you never know 'till you try!

Thanks, I'll definitely look into. I also agree that this group of forums is an amazing place for learning stuff. I say group because I'm on here and Mu-43 and visit the other ones here and there as well.

On the subject of clubs I'm no great socialiser, but I must say that joining a local camera club has been most instructive in respect of seeing a great variety of other peoples work, both as digital projection and in print form, AND to have them critiqued by someone who is a trained judge. I think the latter is the key element. Looking from afar I thought that judges were somewhat opinionated individuals, however a good judge is someone who enjoys looking at photographs of all genres and offers honest, non judgemental comment, not swayed by their own personal preferences.

For me I think it has had the most influence on my post processing work where I now hopefully exercise more care and attention than I previously did.

A quick internet search has found 25 camera clubs in Devon (some probably aren't listed, mine isn't), and that's a mainly rural county, most are located in smaller towns with populations of 10,000-15,000 with some in places with populations as low as 5,000.

The grave of James Eddey, Rame Church

Once again a simple reprocessing (ignoring the conversion to black and white) involving an opening up of the shadows and removal of a distracting branch amongst the vegetation seemingly growing out of the headstone.

As a little aside, unbeknown to me at the time I took this photograph, this grave marks the beginning of a change for the pilotage service around Plymouth. Three men were drowned in this incident, two pilots who left two widows and twelve children orphaned and an apprentice pilot. Up until this time the pilots of the villages of Cawsand (where these men came from) and Turnchapel were in competition, after this tragedy they came together, pooled their resources and income and laid the foundation of the pilotage service in Plymouth that persists to this day.
