Starting Over - a kind of PAD for January

I've been redoing all my website images in B&W using the DXO Filmpack programme the DXO people were giving away a while ago and posting them on 500px. This is the BMW HQ building in Munich, known as the Vierzylinder. For comparison the colour version is here.

Some more from Blue Springs. I would love to go back there, and hopefully it be a little bit better of a day. Was pretty cloudy when I went.

I may have taken some liberties on the green saturation when first processing it but I like it.

The more I shoot the more I like B&W shots. Plus Silver Efex is really fun to play with.

Rame Church

This one dates from 5th July 2010 and shows the 12th century church at Rame in the extreme south east corner of Cornwall. The church has no electricity supply and is lit by candles. Since taking this photograph the church has been re-roofed as it was leaking

This original shows a strange effect in the top right hand corner, almost like an embossed barred area. This affected some others from this series which, as I recall, were processed with Raw Therapee. Whether it was something to do with the lens used I don't know, but I wasn't aware of it affecting other photographs taken with different lenses.

A conversion to black and white with the aid of Silver Efex Pro 2, the original raw file now having been processed with DxO Optics Pro 9.

I haven't dropped through a crack. I'm weeding out 1,000 or more dupes (don't ask). So far I'm finding photos of personal significance only.
Keep up the good work. I'm loving this thread!

On the Great Western Railway in Edwardian England

This was my original black and white take on the scene which shows a gentleman dressed in what I assume to represent the Edwardian period having his ticket checked before boarding a steam railcar built in 1904.

Having ventured into areas of Silver Efex Pro 2 that I've never been to before, I'm hoping this is perhaps a little more typical of a standard sort of photograph processed in that same Edwardian era and discovered in someones attic all these years later.

Down to 300 files that are probably dupes - whew!
Took a break for the FMS PAD and wound up doing my second ever focus stack, so I'll post it. Photo from a shoot for our December PAD, as long as I had a lighting setup and a camera with a new lens on a tripod, I figured I'd try a few subjects. It only occurred to me tonight that I had an image whose subjects were sharp and background was too sharp, and an image whose background was beautifully blurry and two of whose subjects were blurry too - and they were both from the same shoot on a tripod.
It's not a big difference, or perfectly done, or a startling technique - but I'm happy to begin adding another trick to my bag-o-tricks.

Reverse engineering

In this case the first posting of this image was for the Silver September challenge, so it was rendered in monochrome

For this exercise I've posted a colour alternative, which in my belief shows why the original in monochrome was actually a more atmospheric image (please excuse the lack of my normal border for this photograph, a slip on my part)

I was always concious that there was "something wrong" with this image. Due to my slightly defective colour vision I can struggle with some colour images, and this was certainly one of them

131005-1050805.jpg

I've now revisited the image and in DxO Optics Pro 9 I've made the following changes,
1. slight reduction in colour temperature
2. slight increase in smart lighting
3. increase in microcontrast
4. increase in vibrancy
5. considerable increase in highlight slider
6. increase in midtones slider

The resulting tiff file has been processed in Photoshop CS2 as per my techniques outlined in post #12

I've also cropped the image to place the main subject on the left hand one thirds line such that it is now sailing into the picture rather than being placed dead centre

I'm hopeful that this has improved the picture
