Panasonic got pretty close with a 400 mm (effective) zoom and constant f2-something aperture at all focal lengths, on a sensor that's one inch (I think). There's definite progress being made.

The FZ1000 is f2..8 at the wide end, f4 at the long end (400mm), but with a 1" sensor. The FZ200 is the constant f2.8 25-600mm equiv, but a much smaller sensor.
