TAMRON announces the development of 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 (Model A065) for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless. Class-leading compact and lightweight* telephoto zoom | News | TAMRON
TLDR is that Tamron announced they are developing the Tamron 70-180mm f 2.8 Di III VC VXD G2, no specific release date yet, just Q4 2023 (so not very far).
The improvements are:
*VC, the lens will (finally? I didn't miss it) built in image stabilization. (The marketing hasn't mentioned any compatibility with Sony's own IBIS so they may not be synched).
*Minimul Focus Distance, of 30 cm, at the 70mm end now is supported with autofocus (the 180mm end is still 85 cm).
*Improved optical formulae for better image quality.
*New and better VXD autofocus motor with better tracking.
*Support for in lens firmware update and customisation via USB C port on the side of the lens.
*The lens is 15.6 cm long and has 855 grams weight so it's still very small and compact.
Personally I am very excited for it because of the better AF motor (I have the first gen and sometimes it can struggle with subjects running towards me, which is my main usage for this lens).
I hope they will have an AF focus limiter to improve the AF reliability for my use case. The lens shows the switch hump the big telephoto lenses have but it doesn't show what switches they have on them.
But I won't be in a rush to replace my 1st generation, I can stay a while and listen (Diablo II reference).
