Not far from me a local power generating company has land fenced off adjacent to a trail. Three deer behind the chain link fence seemed to be just as interested in the people on this side of the fence today as the people's interest in their side of the fence. The reason I bring up the fence at all really is to explain the crazy, criss-cross bokeh, which I actually kind of warmed up to in this particular image.

In the past, my wife and I would meet some really good professional wildlife photographers in Yellowstone or Rocky Mountain National Park. We never approached the animals but our photo buddies showed us how to wait for them to come to us and the places to wait. This trip was back in the film days and I just got around to scanning the Ektachrome. It was at Rocky Mountain and shows how close you can get to the animals by letting them come to you and knowing when they were likely to come. We always went during the elk rut and got some nice shots of bulls fighting for the harem. I have put one shot to show you the grounds they like to inhabit and the size of some of the groups. Most are controlled by a gigantic bull elk who constantly herd the females for breeding. We generally went twice a year, in late spring and in the fall when the tourist activity was manageable. I don't know why we don't go now---but then--it might be that I am not quite as mobile as in the past.
It is my idea of heaven. Nikon D4s with Nikon 300mm 2.8 and Gitzo tripod (the heavy one).

A band of Rocky Mountain Big Horn sheep rams in Yellowstone N.P. The boss ram has huge horns and is a definite trophy.
