...but I finally got close enough to get a halfway decent shot of the critter. These guys are so shy around here the minute they spot you they are diving to run silent and run deep.

Such a commotion when my spaniel disturbed him, I thought at first it was a kangaroo until he shot up the tree.

Not so little, he was a good 3' 6" or more.

I actually knew that...my wife was 11 when she got a sickly baby boa constrictor the size of a pencil that came in a banana shipment (true story!), and by the time I met her 10 years later the snake was 6' long and quite healthy. The snake lived to be 41 (and 8' long), and we've been married for 45

Anyway, I had to learn a lot about snakes and lizards; even now she has three snakes. Fun fact: the mosaic patterns on the sides of those monitors make great resolution targets for lens testing, but it's up to you to persuade the lizard to hold still!

An old phone snap taken at a roadhouse I stopped at a few years ago. This would be a cousin of the other one and full grown. We reckon somebody had stayed in that cabin for a long period and had been feeding it.
