What is the function of this glass building, Lucien?
that, is where they keep all the cremated bodies. I actually never went in there. I suppose it holds ashes in containers, and the deceased in the complex are written all over the building. Place in question is Mt. Pleasant Cemetery

Phineas Fish by Andrew Priest, on Flickr

The Fremantle Primary School Heritage Garden, an acknowledgement of the Old Alma Street Cemetery which was once located on the site of the now school. The site consists of seven free-standing headstones as mute witnesses to the many hundreds of men, women, children, seaman, army officers, convicts, their guards and others who made up the early European settlement of Fremantle.

The first burial at the cemetery was recorded on April 3, 1831 - John Livesay, boatswain, age 32. Mr Livesay died of scurvy. The first school on the site, the South Terrace School was established in 1904 after the cemetery was exhumed.

Pietro Sputore 1934 – 1975 – Fremantle Cemetery by Andrew Priest, on Flickr

The inscription on the gravestone which is in Roman Catholic Lawn B is all in Italian so no translation. What caught my eye, besides the angel which was my focus of this visit to the cemetery, is that the gravestone is for two people, yet only Pietro is on it. No one has been added to the stone since 1975 but the grave is attended and well cared for. That is both beautiful and sad at the same time.

A little searching brings up a Freo StreetWise Facebook post from 2016 about a Pietro Sputore who went fishing in 1975 off Garden Island. The boat capsized, Petro hit his head and drowned along with his friend Orazio Serra, founder of European Ceramics. A third friend survived. This may well be Pietro's grave and the reason his wife has not yet joined him.

I also believe this tragic event occurred only 11 years after Pietro was naturalised as an Australian.
