We had our previous cat, Lucy for over 20 years. It took over a year before my wife was ready for another cat, and we ended up getting 2!

Wow. Sarge was with us for over 19 years. He passed in May of 2023. We sorely miss him but alas, I'm allergic, and for the first time in decades I'm breathing normally. And as the kids are long grown and we like to travel...

Yeah, it can be a tough decision when getting a pet. Part of the reason we went with 2 is so they have each other when we're not home. They are sisters from the same litter, so they get along quite well, despite considerably different dispositions.
