Fuji The Official, International, Multi Dimensional, X100 Street Thread.

As noted over on the Ricoh street thread, I spent a couple of days in Altantic City earlier this week (when the heat was merely oppressive, before it turned deadly) and did a LOT of shooting along the boardwalk. Jeez, if America is a melting pot, places like AC and Vegas must be the burnt residue that never quite comes out of the pot. Fascinating place - I can't say I like it but to say I'm fascinated by it is a huge understatement. Such a weird combination of rich and poor feeding off of the gambling culture and the fact that its also a very poor city in the midst of all of this and throw in an old beach resort community with a decidedly middle 20th century feel and you get quite a lot going on. Between really well off folks coming for the casinos, middle class folks from Philly and NYC coming down for the beaches and casinos, some of the locals hanging out and some panhandling and others just working menial jobs (like pushing the seeming millions of taxi "carts" up and down the boardwalk), foreign visitors checking it out and getting some sort of warped impression of the US, its all a bit overwhelming. I took a lot of shots, some with the GRD3, a few with the X100. As much as I love the X100 for some stuff, I'm just more comfortable shooting with a small camera without a viewfinder for this kind of work. When conditions allow of course. It can't compete with the X100 for IQ, but for this kind of shooting, IQ isn't the priority. Some of the shots are flattering to the subjects, many are far from it, but its how I saw it...

Here's a flickr set for anyone who wants to see the whole bunch of them:

And here are a few X100 shots. There's a lot more Ricoh stuff, so check out that thread or the Flickr stream if interested in any more...

And one that's a bit less gritty - not street at all, but what the hell - if you ride or walk down the boardwalk all the way to the south end, its a completely different environment - nice little beach town down there...

Ray, I know I commented on Flickr but apparently I forgot to write anything here! What has become of me?!

I enjoyed looking through all of your Atlantic City pictures very much. I haven't been there since I was a little girl...I remember my father riding a horse on the beach. We must have been on our way back from somewhere because my parents certainly didn't gamble. That was many years ago. Clearly things have changed, though it was always a strange place I think.

This first Fuji shot with the Dollar Bill beach towel in the background really gets to me. Some of my favorites are over in your Flickr stream, but I think also on the Ricoh thread, too.:drinks:

Brian, that is one amazing motor scooter! This driver is certainly prepared, isn't he? Lovely natural colors in each of these. I'm assuming your using the RAW files, yes?

Thank you for your compliments, Brian. I used Silver Efex Pro 2 with Lightroom tweaking, too.

I think I fluffed the bike shot - it was slightly over exposed and I pulled it back too much - will try again tomorrow. Yes, I'm shooting raw, using the included raw converter based on Silkypix to produce 16 bit tiff for finishing in Lightzone.

Cheers

Brian

Ah, OK. I don't have any experience with Silkypix, but I know you're an old hand at Lightzone, for sure.

I think that motor scooter is a classic. Maybe I'm just too ignorant, but I've never seen so many mirrors and lights on a scooter before!;)

That's better - scooter portrait above re-loaded, developed in-camera from RAW (thanks for that tip Don!)

You may have to reload this page to get the update (F5 in windoze)

Cheers

Brian

Hi all,

I am new to this forum (just purchased a X100 to support my love of street photography), and may I say that these photo's are ALL very inspiring. Now I am frustrated being stuck at a desk, and not walking around with my camera!!
