Sony The wonders of today's cameras . . .

During my quiet time today, a big old moon was shining through the window, and I kept getting nudges: "Go take a picture of it."

So I bundled up (12 degrees F here), stepped out with my trusty Sony HX400V in P mode, zoomed in all the way, and it was having trouble locking onto the focus and the exposure.

So I put in IA+ mode (intelligent auto plus, I think), and it locked focus and decided HDR was the thing to do. Below is the straight out of camera result.

Next time, try the "IA++" mode. That way, you can send the camera outside to take the photo while you stay warm inside.

(sounds like your wife has already discovered a version of this mode)

Put the center of the frame at the edge of the moon where the light meets the black, half press/hold, then recompose and complete the shot. The camera needs the contrast to focus.

How about manual focus to infinity - that'd be close enough, wouldn't it?

Assuming the camera has manual focus, and infinity is accurate.
