To frame or not to frame...

AlwaysOnAuto

Hall of Famer
So I have made some frames out of some old dresser mirror pieces that used to go on my wife's dresser.
I've selected some photos I'm thinking of having the local photo shop print.
She says the photos I've chosen don't go with the frames.
To test her theory I started a slide show on the computer and propped up a frame in front of my monitor to get a feel for how they might look.
Granted, there is not mat involved here yet so it's hard to really tell what they'd look like. I was planning on getting the lady at the frame shop to help me choose mat colors and have her make them too.
Here are some quick photos of what the slide show looked like.

Any advice on which ones look better to you would be helpful to me. The frames are kind of a dark golden oak color.

It really is basically a matter of taste. And looking at your selection I must say I'd agree with your wife. With all of these motives I'd prefer a simple aluminum or plastic frame. Anything that doesn't draw too much attention away from the photo in it.

Just to give you an impression, I made a photo gallery in my living-room with three panels (70x50 cm).
There are reflections in the frames, so I'll include the layout I made of the original photos.

I think you need to go old school with these wooden frames. Try adding a white border around the image - bigger the better - so you have separation between the image and the wooden frame. This would allow the image and the frame to compliment one another rather than fight one another. You can either do it digitally or cut your own mount. Be careful with the colours in the images too - choose images that compliment the colour of the wood rather than clash with it, although the white border might give you more freedom to play with.

Thank you guys.
I stopped by the frame shop to see what the lady there would suggest. She wouldn't even look at my pictures, said it was up to my wife and I to decide. She did suggest that a landscape of some sort would work better with the wood than bright colors.
I don't have many of those types of photos that I've taken myself. I'm leaning towards the Big Sur photo and the yellow orchid since it has the wood fence in the background.
Short of that I'm rethinking if I'll use these or not.
I saved some old black frames my wife wasn't going to use, so I may get them down from the garage rafters next time my car is out of the garage and get some of my photos printed to fit them instead.
