Thinking of something Dorothea Lange once said: “The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.”

Half the time I think that's very true. The other half of the time, I'm not sure what it really means.

But sometimes, just the act of looking through my camera's viewfinder, whether it's an EVF, an OVF or a screen, I think allows me to look a little more intently. Or possibly just the opposite: by looking at something "less intently", I wonder if I might be freeing myself to look at something in a different way than I might have, ordinarily?

Here, in this photo - I'm used to looking at the overly bright images my smartphone screen shows me of the world around me - but then a random thought popped up: what would it be like to look at my smartphone's screen, not with my eyes, but through the 'eye of my camera'?

Moral of the story: after a long writing session, after midnight, the brain cells probably aren't functioning optimally.
