I bought a 32 GB CF card (SanDisk) and a UGREEN multi-card reader: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01ARAH6O0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. The D700 works just fine, but I can't read the cards. The card reader does just fine with SD cards on my PC at work and on my Mac at home. On both computers, nothing changes when I put in the CF card. I bought another card (same kind of card) and still can't read it. Any suggestions?

Agree, almost certainly a dud reader. If a bent pin, try to carefully straighten it. Probably easier just to buy a new reader - they are cheap as chips.
To be honest, I did buy another. No difference. Two separate cards and two separate readers. I also had an older CF reader that did work but then mysteriously stopped, which is why I bought this new one. I’ll check the pins in the morning.

When looking for a new reader, get one that takes about 3/4 of the depth of the card. Most are 'shallow'. The 'deep' ones align the pins and holes far better.

Try another USB port?
On two different computers, no less. It’s just strange. I think I’ll borrow a card reader from the ITS and and see if that works.
