Uncool move amazon

My packages are delivered by UPS or FedEx, so Amazon has little influence on how they are delivered. As I live up a long driveway off a country road, they usually just leave everything near the door under the eaves and all is well.

Camera porn :D

In all seriousness, I battle regularly with Amazon delivery. I'm a Prime member and their delivery "service" is abysmal. I have a drive, a tall gate and a front courtyard. Everybody else manages to work this out. Not the Amazon boys, oh no... I have had parcels left on the cars, under a wiper blade, lobbed over the gate, on the drive, under a car, balanced on top of the gate and my all-time favourite, in the courtyard but not under cover - this is a particularly moronic thing to do when it's raining and there are plenty of places to leave a parcel under cover. The answer from Amazon is always the same "it will never happen again".

Yeh right.
I have been buying most of my recent stuff, including used, from Adorama. I have found their used stuff to be in better condition than B&H.

I have taken photos in the past of shameful packaging, and unfortunately all I get is a form of Amazon "Store Credit." I've had some good luck on high value items, it's been on other items of smaller value that you think would be a no-brainer that someone had a visit from what I sarcastically call the "Good F%@*!ing Idea Fairy" and received an extra sprinkling of the dust.

To update this, and make it worse. Now, when you use the free return option to drop off your return with UPS. You are now no longer allowed to get a receipt for the drop off from UPS. Nor is the tracking number amazon assigns any good. As all of the amazon returns are thrown into a box together which is given a different tracking number. If an issue arises, all you can do is go back to where you dropped off the package to get a confirmation that it was scanned in at a UPS facility to be returned. Needless to say, I will no longer be purchasing any camera gear, or higher dollar purchases through amazon.

IMHO, they reached the point of cutting costs at the expense of good customer service years ago, and have added fuel to the flaming dumpster.

I guess the cost cutting is still helping their bottom line overall.

Or it might turn and bite them in the arse if they start losing too many customers.

The UPS Stores are much more of a scam than Amazon, and the free return ploy of theirs is probably more their doing than Amazon's. Amazon shouldn't ever charge you to return a defective or damaged product, but you do have to select the option to print and package the item yourself.

I always get my amazon deliveries sent to the nearest amazon lockers for me to pick up. I’ve not had any problems with the packaging to date. Was your lens from amazon or from their market place? If they are not processed and packaged by amazon I can understand why their packaging might not be up to standard.

@Briar it was new from amazon. My experience recently has been that stuff from vendors selling through amazon have been packaged much better. Probably due to them working off of a feedback/rating system.

You might as well keep it. Amazon couldn't care less.

They do not even inspect returns. It will end up on a pallet and someone who buys Amazon returns in bulk to resell will get a good score of a nice new lens in perfect condition.

A better idea would be to call them and complain, you may get a credit of a substantial amount. Just returning it will not influence their behavior and you will still need a lens.

Unfortunately I already returned it. But, to your point. You are spot on about them not inspecting it. I dropped it off at a ups store yesterday, and was refunded last night. I will keep that in mind if there is ever a next time.

You just have to use Amazon's large unwieldiness to your advantage. Do they have the mom and pop care for an individual transaction? Heck no. But they have the deep coffers to make sure customers are satisfied if things go amiss, and in my experience they are usually pretty good about that.
