I see you're using a DX lens on a FX body (clearly giving you less megapixels) and your result shown above looks great.
Do you often use this combo? Do you find it works out well? Would you still be able to crop?

This was actually an experiment. Over in the Zf Announced thread, I was pondering the fact that if I did get a Zf, I would be missing the small and light long telephoto I appreciate in the DX world.

It dawned on me that I could indeed test out how this would work by using the Z6. That is the result you see above.

I didn’t think to do this before because I tested the 50-250 on the Z8, because at the time, I didn’t have the 180-600. The results were not what I had hoped for. The Z8 sensor is too demanding and I would not recommend that pairing. It works but you definitely see the limitation of the DX optic.

However, the Z6 seems to play well with the DX telephoto. My theory then is that it should also play nice with the Zf. Is the IQ the same level as an S lens like the 24-120/4? No, but good enough for the use I would employ. In post, I needed to apply a roughly 10-20% increase in sharpness in Lightroom over my normal to get what you see.

The other thing I need to get out of my head is the 10mp file that the DX lens would provide on the Z6 or Zf. If I’m perfectly fine with shooting the almost 20 year old 6mp Minolta Maxxum 7D, then what is my issue with the 10mp output from a state of the art setup today? All in my head I say! lol. Just need to prove to myself and my sometimes over analytical brain that it will work out.

I can use the 50-250 until such time as either Tamron/Nikon/Sigma make a smallish 70-300 like lens or I can just tack on the TC2.0x onto the Z 70-180 and have a 105-270mm f/5.6, which would be pretty close to the 70-300 equivalent anyway…and I already have the TC. I’ve not handled the Tamron 70-300 in Z so have no reference at this point if that makes sense.

I did do some cropping on the images you see. No up sizing of them in post in Topaz either. I’ve always been impressed with Nikon’s files and their malleability. Those shots were OOC JPG as well, not RAW files, so that is another feather in the Nikon cap on their first generation Z sensor.

@gryphon1911 Thank you for your well explained response, which I really enjoyed reading and appreciate you writing.
To be sure, I have sold A0 posters taken with the 8 megapixel Canon 30D. So it is quite possible and we've been on the pixel hunt for too long
to appreciate what can be done with less.
