Sorry about the snafu with the iMac, Christina. I hope it is something simple. I know that for those of us who are not computer folks that even something simple requiring what many think of as nothing can feel overwhelming.

So I guess there are plusses and minuses about having a desk top, depending up where one spends one's day...or night. Bu you've got the iPad...and you can always put all those pictures on your iMac after you've snapseeded them.:2thumbs:

Don't worry about getting the real books - we need to support our bookstores!

Good luck with getting things squared away - and please let us know about the new operating system!

P.S. I'd missed your post, Karen. I like your strategy.

Both, and I'll tell you why.
First, I'm still mostly learning composition and using my camera in P-mode, so some postprocessing is often needed after the fact on RAW files.
Second, the iPad screen is very convenient for reviewing and selecting whic pics are to survive and be eventually processed.
Third. Here the roads diverge: well-lit or lucky pics get the sofa treatment (with snapseed these days), difficult ones wait for Lightroom.
Fourth, when using Lightroom I only look at the results on the iPad screen, which - albeit small - is much better than my old flat panel for judging results. I use AirDisplay as a secondary screen for LightRoom. I think that if it's good enough for Ctein to work on, it's good enough for me to play.
When on Lightroom, I reprocess entire sets of the pics I like. Often the result is quite different from what Snapseed produced, and I like both results.
Yesterday, I found my way back to the article that Ctein wrote for The Online Photographer: "Why I need an iPad (and You Might Not). I reread it and my desires were fueled yet again! I like the way he talks about using AirDisplay and how great the screen on the iPad is for editing..even compared to his MacBook Pro (which I have)... Then I figured you must have mentioned AirDisplay...and lo and behold, Alf - you did and I'd even commented upon it. Such a great memory I have, eh?

I'm going to have to get myself over to the Apple Store to discuss how it all works...

BB...do your self a favour...go out and get an iPad....I first saw it in England when Jono brought one out of his beautiful hand made camera bag...long before they were available in the UK or Canada and I fell in love with it...got one as soon as I was able to and it goes with me on my holidays and I shall be uploading my images from the camera to review them.
Bill, I may yet go for it...in a while. Jono has lots of stuff I'd like - such as horses. I didn't realize that you had one, Bill - that's great! You are always on the cutting edge!:drinks:

Struggling to upload a photo from my iPad2 to the gallery. It won't let me select the file from my iPad so I tried uploading a 1024 x 680 image to flickr and try to link it to the gallery but not working either. Any ideas other than copying the file to my laptop and uploading to the gallery from there?

On a related matter, I've now got 15 files sitting in the queue as errors, can't see how to delete them.

Sorry you're having problems, Karen.

Hopefully either Alf, John, Jono or Bill Gordon one of the other iPad folks will be able to offer your some good help soon.

There shouldn't be any problem with embedding from Flickr... Wouldn't it work the same way as usual?

I've never tried to link a file from flickr to the gallery before today, it works ok embedding into a normal post. I don't think it's an iPad problem, I think I'm just doing it wrong from flickr to serious compacts gallery. I tried doing the embedding first, then linking the url from flickr but neither worked.

Oh sorry - I misread! The gallery will not work with Flickr or other web hosting sites: https://www.photographerslounge.org/f17/serious-compacts-gallery-faq-46/

Can I host an image at ______ (Flickr, PBase, Zenfolio, Smugmug, etc) and embed/display it in the Gallery?
Unfortunately, no, this is not possible. Only images hosted in the Gallery can be displayed in the Gallery.
Is this a wireless 3G iPad? I would have thought that you could upload to the gallery directly, but obviously I'm really ignorant about the iPad.

Two different matters
1. Uploading. The ipad has no visible filesystem, that's why you can't select from the browser. There are plenty of Flickr apps, and they CAN access your photo library.
I use flickstackr or upload directly from snapseed (losing exif, it's a bug), photogene or photoforge.

2.
Linking to pics
Get the image bbcode from Flickr in the browser, paste it in your post.

3. Gallery Don't use it, it's so sliw.

Hope this helps, I'm in Venice tonight so I'll be home only late tomorrow. Google "Villa Pisani Strà" if curious.

I chose the wifi 32GB iPad 2 in black.

In the gallery upload it wont let me select the file from the iPad, the select file link is greyed out.

Not to the gallery, but to Flickr. I know that Tapatalk can upload pics to be inserted in posts and host them on its servers, not sure about forum runner.

using Flickr bbcode links is more versatile anyway.
Hope this helps

Karen, it seems that you'll have to put those files on your computer in order to upload to the gallery. It's possible that someone else may come along and have another suggestion, but since Alf says the iPad has no visible file system that seems to be why the gallery uploader won't work.

so far on the photos side of the ipad I only use it as an image viewer

I have found the easiest way to do this is to prepare the images in Lightroom - "batch" copy these as jpegs to a named folder and then "import" the named folder (album) into iphoto and leave it there.
I then use itunes to synch this named folder to photos on the ipad
If I need to edit the named album I do this using iphoto and (if necessary), LR - after edit on my Mac - then re synch in itunes

when I add another "album" in iphoto, (on my Mac), unless I check, (effectively, re synching), all the other albums that I have on my ipad they will be deleted from the ipod

The ipod, seems to work in a slightly different way to what I am used to, (on the Mac), and unless I use itunes, (compared with say, Airdisc), as the "communication" medium, naming albums and deleting individual images seems to be "not possible"

In general I find the ipad really good, (I have to be careful as I bought it as a gift for my wife), and it as become her much preferred method for emails, casual "surfing" of the net and skype use as it is much more "portable" than a laptop.

I can see why they are such a great sucess

I'm back, and after a little testing I can confirm that both Forum runner and Tapatalk can upload images to the forum.
Forum Runner uploads as-is (you are limited to 2mb each), while Tapatalk offers you the choice between having your image hosted on Tapatalk servers and uploading it to the forum. It even asks you if upload the original or a reduced size version.

I still prefer using flickr links, though.
Hope this helps.

I'm glad I went through this thread and read it. From a previous thread, I've been looking at a tabs, both Ipad and android based tabs. Much of the use is going to be used for viewing and discarding pictures. I'm still not sure of a convienient way to get pictures to the tablet itself.

You get a sd card reader/camera USB connection kit as an accessory for the iPad, costs £25 here in the UK. I've not used the USB connection but the card reader is sweet. I know it's early days yet but already I love my iPad. I'm a long term iPod touch user and in many ways this is just a large iPod touch but it's not just that ... it does much more. I love the snapseed app, at only £2.99 from ITunes it's an absolute bargain. It's easy to upload photos to flickr and from there I can post pictures into the serious compacts forum. The only hiccup for me is that I can't upload directly to the gallery, buts it's only a hiccup and doesn't detract any of the love I have for my new iPad. The photos look fantastic on the iPad so they are a joy to view.
