Micro 4/3 Valoi easy35 - OK with M43?

Kamera store have a tempting Black Friday deal on the Valoi easy35 negative digitising system.

I’ve tried a few other ways of digitising many years of 35 negs with limited success. Therefore I’m considering buying the easy35 system for use with an EM5iii and the Oly 60mm macro prime.

Does anyone have any experience with easy35 and M43 kit, please?

The Valoi basically stays on my old OM-D E-M10 with the 30mm f/3.5 macro. 🙂

I think the only downside of M43 is the camera's aspect ratio. Shooting a 3:2 film frame with a 4:3 camera means you always need to do some cropping. But I'm happy with the ~12Mpix end results I get after crop and haven't felt any need to try the high-res modes of newer Olympus bodies.

I use it on Fuji. It works very well. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work just as well on M43. Just make sure you have a lens with a compatible working distance, and with a filter thread that doesn't recess into the lens.

I chose the stack of rings so the width of the 3:2 film fills the width of the 4:3 frame. That leaves top and bottom black bars from the film itself in the frame. These are actually helpful in setting the white balance, after which I make a 3:2 crop. Like you I find the remaining image offering enough detail. I don’t use High Resolution mode. I don’t feel the result would benefit enough from that.

The Valoi arrived today. It only took a five days in transit from Finland via DHL. That’s faster than some deliveries to me from UK suppliers.

There was a sting in the tail: HMRC import duty and VAT adding another £43 to the bill. Not unexpected and not too bad considering I bought the unit at a Black Friday price.

If anyone’s interested I’ll post my experiences with the kit when I get around to using it.

Talk about possible sting...
I am thinking about buying the easy35. How much was it with the Black Friday deal?

The price, delivered but before import costs was €214 or roughly £184. Total was therefore about £227.

Since my purchase, I’ve noticed occasional deals come and go on the site. If you do go for the system and you want accessories then buy everything in one go to save on delivery charges.

The plan is to buy everything if/when I buy it. I never took any slides/positive film, but I am sure there are some in the boxes with photos and films I have received from dead relatives.
I think they have a 10% first purchase deal.
And there will not be any import fees for me.
