Voigtlander lenses on BH - availability?

Discussion in 'Ask B&H Photo' started by TraamisVOS, Jan 5, 2011.

  1. Hi Chuck,

I just bought a used Leica M8.2 and have my eye on a few of the Voigtlanders at BH but most of them seem to be unavailable at the moment. Any idea when you'll have more in stock? Hoping to make the purchases soon, the Australian currency is at an all time high right now so the prices at BH are very competitive when compared with local Australian prices.

At the moment I'm looking at possibly:

"Voigtlander Ultron 28mm f/2.0 Manual Focus M Mount Lens - Black"

and either one of these two:

"Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f/1.4 Lens" (I presume the one that's available is the double coated version of this lens)

    "Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.4 Lens"

(*** Since the original post, I've found & bought the Nokton 40mm on eBay brand new so at this stage I'm really only looking at the Ultron 28mm if it becomes available soon at BH.)

I've read Steve Huff's review on the Nokton 35mm, just wanted to know whether you could offer your view or customer feedback with regard to the single/double coated versions to go with the M8.2? At present I'm thinking that the single coated with its more 'neutral' (ie 'flat-ish'?) colours may make it more amenable to post-processing, although the stronger contrast out of the double coated looks very tempting.

Also, I'm aware that I will need to buy some filters for the M8.2, any recommendations to go with those particular lenses I mentioned above?

Postage - could I also ask out of interest what the approximate combined postage might be for two lenses like those above to Australia, postcode 3000? I think I will very likely make only one purchase at a time (ie. each lens separately) due to the AUD$1000 import tax threshold in Australia unfortunately. Need to keep each purchase under $1000 or I will be slapped with an additional 15% tax charge at Customs.

One more question - why is PayPal only restricted to US, UK and Canada only? Any chance Australia could be added to that list?

    - James.

Sorry for the delay. The E-Mail notifications from the site seemed to have stopped working.

Voigtlander lens are made in small batches and availability is almost always tight. We rarely have any indication product is shipping until we receive it.

I just purchased Nikon D5000 because it will accept all Nikon F mount lens including older non AI. I have found my older lens giving me a much flatter image which for me is easier to edit as opposed to a more contrasty file. When I have film scans made at my lab, I always request no tweaking. The flatter the image file, the better for my tastes.

I have Nikkor-H Auto 50mm f/2 (1964) single coated lens which makes very sharp images. The only draw back to older or single coated lens is how they handle or do not handle glare, reflections or a light source in an image. For me it is almost always produces a bright ghost like rendering with little detail. Stopping down a lens in general almost always improves the image detail. Image quality is a matter of personal taste. I perfer the look of older lenses.

Figuring out what your total bill of sale including shipping and handling costs on our web site is easy. (Remember, Insurance is included on your order)

To see our shipping options and rates, please go to our website and click on the 'Shipping' icon towards the bottom of any product web page.

Add your item(s) to your cart. In the cart screen you will see a shipping calculator. Type in your zip code (for orders delivered in the USA ) or country ( outside the US ) and hit submit.( NO other information is needed ) In the shopping cart screen, you will find your total including shipping rates for your items plus an explanation of our various shipping methods.

B&H does collect New York State sales taxes, when we ship an order inside NYS. When we ship an order out side of NYS, the customer is responsible to pay the sales taxes for the receiving state or import charges for the country of destination.
  3. Thanks Chuck! The flatter image was exactly what I was after, although with regard to the SC, stopping it down to prevent flare or ghosting seems to go against the idea of purchasing a fast lens. I suppose my thinking is to then go for the MC which will allow wide open aperture shooting, letting more light in should also help alleviate issues with high contrast and/or lessening of detail in the blacks.

It's a pity about BH's Voigtlander stock availability, your prices are competitive. Thanks for the info.
