I know that area well Scott, walked the trail around Malham a few times. Have you climbed the waterfall a little further along, Gordale scar ? You get a bit wet sometimes but its a great experience. Did it with my daughter a few years ago, she loved it.

Our usual walk is from car park upto gordale scar , up the falls (winter is very treacherous) across to tarn then back across to the cove!
It is a lovely hike...especially if weather is nice..holding off this year so far..due to pneumonia my lungs are knackered! Can only manage maybe ten miles ( without any big hills) the steps up past gordale waterfalls probably would kill me!
