Another wonderful adventure on the Rio Grande. Almost no wind when we set out — most unusual — and it made for easy navigating amongst the mostly below-water mudflats. But the wind picked up after a time, and with the still strong current, making headway was often a challenge.

But we got upstream to just past Medio Canyon (6 miles or so), and floated down river for lunch at Cochiti Canyon. The rock formation and wildflowers were most inspiring, evocative of the power of nature and Earth.

Sightings included a merganser and other ducks, Great Blue herons, two Snowy egrets, and the usual Spotted sandpipers, Ravens, Turkey vultures, and Black phoebes. But best of all was a huge elk with gigantic antlers crossing the road just in front of us whilst on our way to the boat ramp! Wow, was that exciting!
