Weird numbers, and what's happened over here on SC?

I've been all m43, so I've been parked over on mu. But with my RX100, thought I'd share over here. But this place feels really dead.

Looking at the numbers, there are 6 members online, and 76 guests.

At mu-43, there are 75 members and 168 guests (11pm EDT Weds night).

Odder, is "most users ever" is 1,250 at SC in 2010 but only 499 on MU in 2012. What happened on 8/17/2010?

No, it's not as busy over here but it's not exactly dead, either. Responses often are very rapid, just like on mu-43.com. Other times, it'll take a few hours. I've joined other photo sights with great hope, posted a message and failed to receive a response even weeks later. A few took months. On one, I never heard back from anyone. This site is not in that kind of company.

Without doing "thread counting" things do seem quieter of late.

I've noticed a few of the "usual suspects" are very quiet or missing and assumed other things are intervening in their lives - its summer holiday time after all in the northern hemisphere.

I've also noticed a few new names appearing.

I hope they're not being put off by the current quiet time.

Where's Armando btw? Haven't seen him here in a while!

I'm sure next month will see some intense posting here in the gear forums

Good points here -- summertime and also though quiet, this site is not dead. As Biro said, I have also been to sites where a postings go uncommented on. Still, quieter than usual, and missing BB, too.

Back in 2010, Engadget sent a huge # of visitors to us one day - hence the 1,250 simultaneous visitors here.

Summer is usually a lull. Mu-43 has been steadily growing, while SC has been relatively unchanging over the past year.

May not be a real busy place, but it is a very comfortable place. We usually perk up when fall sets in and weather cools a bit here in the States. Especially if we get a SI? (single in ?) cranked up.

you should be able to figure it out...
I spend some time both places and I'd have to go along with "dead" as a pretty good description a lot of the time. If you have a question you can generally get it answered here and the people are very very nice, so its a very comfortable place. But its very quiet. Then again, mu43 wasn't all that much busier up until the OMD was announced, and then it exploded over there. Which is great for a vibrant community and energy, but its also gotten a bit nastier and chippier over there lately too. And then there's DPR, which is the very definition of active and vibrant, but too many of the forums also resemble a war zone too much of the time. So, another reminder you can't have it all!

I'm always amazed at how many people I see online at any given time and there's no conversation going on. I would suggest that this site has a brighter group of people who just don't run their mouth for the sake of hearing their gums flapping. So it appears less active, but the regulars are always lurking in the shadows.

The other site is like a gaggle of goofy teenagers yammering away about absolutely nothing. This site is more like a happy married couple who can sit and enjoy each others company without having to say very much at all.

hmmmm... do you mean mu-43 or DPR re: goofy teenagers? I could see that at DPR, but not sure I agree re: mu-43.

FWIW, I leave my browser open pretty much all the time, with all of my common sites given their own "tab" in the browser. So I probably appear to be online pretty nearly all the time, but I actually only actively check the site every now and then, usually a few times per day. Unless I'm at my computer a LOT during the day, in which case its a bit more. But I probably seem to be here a lot more than I actually am. I'm not sure how many other people use their browsers this way, but I'd bet its more than a few...

I meant mu-43.......DPR is more like a gang of bullies
I guess I don't agree then. There's lots of interesting conversation going on over there, and some inane stuff too, but I suppose I'm one of the yammerers, so there's no accounting for my taste. Not sure I'm ready just to sit in a rocking chair and only say "a-yup" every once in a while.

Curious -- any mods know the site stats -- postings last summer vs. this summer?

Ok. I give. Dont want to rock the boat around here. Maybe y'all like it real sleepy.

Any one know any other good sites (i.e. not DPR) for talking about something like the RX100? Ive never tried get DPI or Fred Miranda. I always got the sense they were more for DSLRs. Not sure if there are others.

Totally agree with what some others have said - it is comfortable around here and the current members are great!

It does seem like even before the summer and the OM-D launch, though, SC was quite a bit slower than mu-43. I actually prefer a cozy community most of the time, but I would think that with a a small group of active members, you could have a major impact to the forum, if just 1-2 active members left or stopped posting for whatever reason. Also, with a smaller group, discussions can be fairly predictable, especially, on the gear-specific threads (which seems to be a lot of our activity).

I think it would be great to bring some new members into the community, to keep the discussion fresh and to have enough traffic to maintain threads and challenges. My own personal opinion is that a new person checking out SC would possibly have a hard time figuring out what makes us different from other forums. Most of our discussion as of late seems to be centered around gear, especially the OM-D, X-Pro1 and Nex-7? Nothing wrong with having discussions on those camera systems, but I think the challenge to bringing in new people, and encouraging activity from existing members, is that there are other forums that already serve those systems with very active discussion (e.g. mu-43 on the OM-D, Dyxum on the NEX).

I think the RX100 is a good example. It would seem like SC should be the epicenter for that discussion?

I do think "compacts" can be broad in scope. I have in my own mind that seriouscompacts is about doing more with less (I personally am in the doing "less with more" category). I think the "less" can be pretty broad, smaller and lighter, older digital cameras, smartphones, adapted lens picked up from the thrift store, film cameras, innovative new compact systems, etc. The "more" could be about the photographer: creativity, style, technique, post processing/developing, etc.

I am not talking about excluding shots or discussions on the less-compact systems (e.g. my posts have all been OM-D or K-01 related), just that we maybe need additional discussion on more-compact cameras and related photographic technique, in order to offer something different and interesting as far as camera forums go?

Sorry for the random, crazy-person note in the suggestion box, Amin! You and the moderators do a great job around here and I appreciate having the forum.
