An abalone (Haliotis) shell.
(My late grandfather who was obsessed with marine life already owned this sample before I was born and it plays a role in one of my earliest memories.)

Richard's guess was closest and so he has the dubious honor of hosting the next round. Congrats!

Actually, it wasn't much of a guess as I thought it was the outside of an oyster shell rather than the inside of anything, but since the ball is now in my court I will try to come up with something tomorrow.

I have some cufflinks made with Abalone its a bit like looking at a solid version of oil or petrol on water

Funny thing, from the chair i am sitting in right now is a 6" abalone shell staring at me. The exact same chair I was sitting in when I made my guess. That'll teach me!!
