Birds Whooping Cranes

We went to the Rockport - Fulton area of Texas, along the coastal bend, for some birding. The main objective was to see whooping cranes. We saw some near Goose Island State Park and on a boat tour. The photos were taken on the tour. I was able to get these shots because the captain was able to put the bow of the boat on the banks of the Intercostal Canal. They are both cropped fairly heavily. We will be going back to the area for the Rookery tour later this spring. There is a large rookery on one of the barrier islands.

They will start migrating north shortly. But if you want to see them and other birds, I highly recommend the area. If you want to fo farther south, the Rio Grande Valley is a great area for birding. (South Padre Island, Brownsville, Edinburg, McAllen)

Nice shots, Jay. Were you on a Sims boat? That is a great area and I have been many times. We were there with our camper in early December.
Thanks. The shots are definitely in the “blind hogs and acorns” category. It would have been nice to have a longer lens but the best camera is the one you have with you. I am not sure what you mean by a Sims boat. But I don’t believe we were on that boat. We went out with Rockport Birding and Kayak Adventures. Tommy Moore is the captain. The boat is named the Skimmer.

Capt. Tommy gives a good tour as well. Went with him the first time. The Sims are Lori and Kevin and they live in Lamar on 8th St. They run tours with no more than 4 persons on the boat out of Lamar.

I have a juvenile Whooper shot I took with Capt. Tommy off the Skimmer that is used at Ebird. https://ebird.org/species/whocra

I saw them as well. The boat is too small for my wife to be comfortable on. If I were still shooting with the long lenses and she was not going on the tour, I would use them because of the smaller group.
