Aristolochia grandifolia, Manual Antonio National Park, Costa Rica. The flower emits an odor like rotting meat to attract flies which crawl into a long tube that makes a turn in the back that looks like a u trap in plumbing. The flower needs the fly to polinate it, but this is not a carnivorous flower as the fly is not digested and can escape.

I have to say that violet crossed my mind Colin, but I wasn't sure. I took the photo in Spain in 2017. Thank you for the link, I found that very interesting.

Had enough rain this year for the desert super bloom to be a likely event this year. First evidence of poppies seen here somewhere near Ramona, CA this weekend. Hope to be able to make it to Borrego Springs in the proper desert within a week or two, and hopefully there will be another super bloom there, because when the desert flowers, it's pretty amazing.

That is astounding. Good luck with the superbloom this year. I made it to Anza-Borrego once and Death Valley twice and those were unforgettable trips.
