First of the native wildflowers around here are Satin Flowers aka Grass Widows, Olsynium douglasii. (Snow drops and crocus etc. don't count as native) Going strong this week which is about a week later than normal.

A new plant for me in the GSMNP. I have seen regular Monotropa (ghost pipe). My partner and I found Monotropa hypopitys a few years back. A second species of non-photosynthetic plant I knew nothing about at the time.

Today, I was on a hike and came across a new one! Sweet Pinesap (Monotropsis spp.) This one is listed as rare throughout its range and threatened in Tennessee. It's a lovely, tiny little stem of flowers and easily blends in with the late winter leaf litter.

The hills and hollows near me have begun to come alive with early wildflowers, and many others showing leaves but no flowers yet. The scenes will be vastly different in just a week.

The sun was a diffuse brightness today due to a hazy cloud cover, but it was still a great day for a bike ride. Lots of things blooming along the trail.
