Fuji X1 Pro vs XE1?

Good balance with a variety lenses is probably more important to me than size or weight.
From what I have been reading, Have think I would really happy with the X1 Pro.

I stopped in to my local camera shop this evening and tried both the X pro 1 and the x-e1. I had anticipated that I was going to prefer the X pro, but left feeling the opposite way. The EVF on the x-e1 was noticeably better both in resolution and lag, yet the lower res LCD on the x-e1 I hardly noticed. AF seemed plenty fast enough on both cameras. They both felt well put together. The 18-55mm feels beautiful to use - better than either the 35mm or the 18mm. I can even see myself replacing my 5dii with an X-e1 at some point once the 23mm f1.4 is released. For me, the X pro 1 and it's OVF isn't with the extra $400.

I don't really like viewfinders that are non-TTL which straight away points me towards the X-E1, with the added bonus that the removal of the OVF comes with a cost saving. I also found when I handled an X-Pro1 that it was lighter than I preferred given the size of the camera and I think that the smaller X-E1 feels better in the hand to me.

My major lament on the X-E1 compared to the X-Pro1 is the smaller rear screen, but screen sizes can be a bit deceptive anyway. For instance, cameras like the Olympus E-PM2/E-PL5 and various Sony NEX models have 3" screens, but because of the height of those cameras the screens are wide but not very high and so a lot of screen real estate is wasted when shot at their native, maximum resolution aspect ratios.

I noticed the same thing. I was surprised by that and figured that it must be that the 18-55mm mounted on the X-E1 was heavier than the 18mm mounted on the X-Pro 1 (as of course it is), but upon switching lenses the XE-1 still felt more substantial to me for its size.

I had the X-E1 for one day, took it back to the store and came home with the X-Pro. So I guess I looked back. The difference in size and weight between the two wasn't significant to me. Yeah, the X-E1 was smaller but not that much smaller. As most everyone else mentioned, it's all about the hybrid OVF/EVF viewfinder. With the rebates, the dif between the X-Pro and X-E1 plus two lenses was only a couple of hundred dollars. Ray decided for me that the OVF was well worth a couple hundred dollars and now I have the X-Pro. The OVF, I feel, significantly improves the handling/performance of the camera, especially coupled with how and what I shoot (photojournalism type stuff). The OVF eliminates the slow refresh rate of the EVF, the bright lines automatically adjusting per the focal length of the zoom/lens is wonderful and it is always there, available and useable in all lighting conditions.

PS- If you think the X-E1 is sexy ... then the X-Pro with it's working rangefinder all decked out in midnight black, is pure porn. The closest thing to a Leica other than a Leica.

I definitely like the idea of the OVF/EVF but figured if I'm going to make the X cameras my primary system I'd get an X-E1 now and save some money for an X-Pro 2 later on

For now, I'd lean towards re-getting the XPro1. I like having the pop up flash on the XE1. But the XE1's higher resolution EVF is not enough to compensate for the lack of the awesome OVF on the XPro1. Once Fuji's gives us an EVF with the same refresh rate as the Oly's (hopefully we'll see that on the next gen), then I'd lean towards an XE2 (instead of XPro2).

+1

I like them both. I particularly like that Fini decided to a kid the current obsession with making the camera as small as possible, regardless of the impact on ergonomics.

I much prefer the option of having an OVF. With a very small investment in practice it is an excellent way to shoot. Much preferable to me than any EVF. at the same time it offes an excellent EVF I needed. I also prefer the slightly larger size of te X-Pro 1.

Overall, it's crucial to spend time with each if you can. Given that the output is the same, it's wiser to spend time on the feel rather than spcifications.

I shot a high school theatre performance last night with the X-E1. Overall it went very well - much better in fact than I anticipated based on my preliminary experience with the camera's AF. The only issue I had was with the EVF in conjunction with the stage lighting at times. I shot in manual so no exposure preview was available as the EVF simply gained up as the camera saw fit. There were several times during the show when the EVF was so bright that I could barely make out the actors on the stage. Since the lighting wasn't predictable, and often changed quickly, manually changing the EVF brightness wouldn't have made much sense. The photos turned out fine, but composition was a problem. Is there a way to manage the way the EVF gains up in scenarios like this or is it simply that in these situations, the advantage of the X-Pro 1's OVF is what is required?

Separately, I really like the shutter sound of the X-E1. Is the X-Pro 1's shutter sound identical?

I also shot a high school performance yesterday, but with OM-Ds, not my X-Pro. The OM-D, for me, is much much better suited for the action and ever-changing and drastically changing light of high school kids. The experience was similar to shooting previous performances with my 1Ds. The fact that I am a complete neophyte with the X-Pro made the decision to go OM-D, plus longer focal lengths, faster focus, faster write times also contributed to an easy decision for the OM-D. Hopefully, as I become more acquainted with the Fuji, the decision will be harder to make.

My mother in law came down for a visit with her dogs for a few days. Between her two pups and our one, its a small house full of the little beasts. And as the house photographer, I have to take the photos of 'em. Yesterday I shot a bunch with the Fuji, mostly the 18. I got a few decent shots out of it, but missed a LOT in relatively low light. Today, in only slightly better indoor light, I shot with the OMD and for that kind of shooting, it really is night and day difference. Whatever very small IQ advantage the Fuji has doesn't mean squat if you don't get the shot. With the OMD and the 45 and 75, I was nailing the shots almost every time.

I love my Fuji and for some types of shooting its always my first choice, but you have to know your tools and for this kind of thing, the OMD was a lot better.

I had neither a problem with action nor with AF for the most part. I would say that 90% of the photos I took were in focus, and I shot at f1.4 and ISO 1600 to keep my shutter speed up to help with action. My only issue was the EVF. I also shot with my 5DII last night and didn't do any better with its AF.

My two-cent about the struggle between these two fine cameras

Hi,

I'm new on this forum and wish you all, from France, a great time in talking about photography and our tools.

Here is why I chose, two weeks ago, the X-E1 and not the XPro 1, though I like very much the OVF, and was a great user of Leica M and Contax G2:

-1- It can seem stupid, but the fact that you can't adjust the diopter in the viewfinder has been a very bad point for the XPro
-2- I'm used to the EVF of my Olympus EP2. The one installed in the X-E1 is much better than the one of the XPro (and than the OLY EVF too)
-3- After trying both cameras with the same lenses, it appeared to me that the speed of the AF was better on the E-X1
-4- I found a deal that I could'nt resist to for an X-E1 equipped with the 18-55 (400€ less than the best street price). And this zoom is astonishingly good!

Now, I'm waiting for the next generation of the XPro and no longer use my EP2, a camera that I liked very much but that can't compare with the quality of the X-E1.
I continue to use my Nikon gears for some works, but the camera that goes out every day with me is now this fantastic X-E1, along with the zoom, the 35mm and the 18mm that I bought used, and some Leitz lenses.
