Fuji X100T SOOC JPEG Sample Images

Hall of Famer
As I am concluding my pre-production testing of the Fujifilm X100T (I'm expecting one last firmware update before production units start shipping in a few weeks), I'd like to take this opportunity to show unedited strait-out-of-camera JPEG samples that I have taken with a pre-production camera (including WCL-X100 and TXL-X100 converters) and several incarnations of beta firmware.

Click on the images to see and download full-size original files and inspect original EXIF data (including Fujifilm Maker Notes).

If you want to get my new eBook on the X-E2 DRM-free in three different formats (PDF, iBook, Kindle) at a 40% discount, click here and enter coupon code XPERT40.

Fujifilm X100T (pre-production) & TCL-X100, SOOC JPEG, Classic Chrome

Natural light, no flash, no reflector, no accessories. Classic Chrome for muted colors and neutral skin tones, DR400% for smooth tonality in the sunlit face, Highlight Tone -1 to retain color texture in the brightest areas. Sharpening +1 and Noise Reduction -1 add crispness and enhance details of this wide aperture exposure.

Fujifilm X100T (pre-production) & TCL-X100, SOOC JPEG, Provia

Lighting up a dull, overcast day with an ETTR exposure at base ISO (originally shot for an external RAW workflow) and -1/3 EV pull processing in the built-in RAW converter. Sharpness +1 and Noise Reduction -1 to counter any wide open aperture and teleconverter softness. White Balance set to Daylight.

Fujifilm X100T (pre-production) & TCL-X100, SOOC JPEG, Pro Neg. Std

A snap from the second day of our Fuji X Secrets INTENSIV three-day Workshop.
Catching the last sunlight of the day with a reflector: Pro Neg. Std neutralizes color tints caused by mixing warm and cold light, setting Shadow Tone to +2 adds contrast to the eyes and darker parts. White Balance set to Daylight, Noise Reduction -1 and Sharpness +1. Dynamic Range was set to DR200% to retain color texture in the backlit hair.

Fuji X Secrets INTENSIV Workshop, Day 2

Fujifilm X100T (pre-production) & TCL-X100, SOOC JPEG, Pro Neg. Hi

Mixing natural light with different color temperatures requires manual in-camera adjustments (thankfully, there is a built-in RAW converter): Pro Neg. Hi offers nice contrast with neutral skin tones, Shadow Tone +2 adds shadow contrast and reduces flare (there's no official lens hood for the TCL-X100). Highlight Tone +1 adds highlight contrast to the sunlit pavement in the background, Sharpening +2 and Noise Reduction -2 produce maximum micro contrast and reveal more detail at base ISO. White Balance was set to 4000 Kelvin to balance warm sunlight with cold shadows. No flash or accessories used.

Fuji X Secrets INTENSIV Workshop, Day 2

Fujifilm X100T (pre-production) & TCL-X100, SOOC JPEG, Pro Neg. Std

Pro Neg. Std offers natural and subtle colors paired with little contrast, so adding shadow contrast with Shadow Tone +2 is here a must. Exposed to the highlights at base ISO and with standard sharpness and noise reduction for a smooth sky.

Fuji X Secrets INTENSIV Workshop, Day 2

Fujifilm X100T (pre-production) & TCL-X100, SOOC JPEG (B&W+Ye)

Black and White with Yellow Filter adds contrast between the skin tones / the wall and the eyes / hair. For black and white JPEGs, minimal noise reduction (-2) and increased sharpness (+1) is typically useful to make the result look more natural (or "analog"), and we achieve maximum contrast by setting both Shadow Tone and Highlight Tone to Hard (+2). Shot with DR200%.

Fuji X Secrets INTENSIV Workshop, Day 2

Fujifilm X100T (pre-production) & TCL-X100, SOOC JPEG, Pro Neg. Std

The same subject in a color version, with neutral Pro Neg. Std and Shadow Tone +2. Highlight contrast was reduced with Highlight Tone -1 to preserve skin color tonality along with DR200%.

This BTS shot shows me and two delegates (with X-T1s) doing it:

DSCF1047 – SOOC JPEG, ISO 3200 by ricopress, on Flickr

Fuji X Secrets INTENSIV Workshop, Day 2

Fujifilm X100T (pre-production) & TCL-X100, SOOC JPEG

High-ISO 3200 street scene portrait in very low light, converted with the camera's standard black and white film simulation setting. Shooting at or above ISO 800, DR can be set to a fixed 400%, as you can always reduce the setting later (if required) to 200% or 100% with the internal RAW converter. In this case, DR400% was useful to avoid blown highlights in the face. Shadow Tone +2, Sharpness +2 and Noise Reduction -2.

Fujifilm X100T (pre-production) & TCL-X100, SOOC JPEG, Classic Chrome

ISO 1600 night portrait illuminated by a single incandescent lamp sitting in the ground. White Balance was accordingly set to Incandescent, Classic Chrome offers natural skin tones. DR400%.

Fuji X Secrets INTENSIV Workshop, Day 2

Fujifilm X100T (pre-production) & TCL-X100, SOOC JPEG, Pro Neg. Std

Another handheld night shot at ISO 1600, using Pro Neg. Std to neutrally capture the very different colors and color temperatures of this scene. DR400% preserves the highlights. With shots like this, one really wishes for an OIS.

Wasserburg

Fujifilm X100T (pre-production), SOOC JPEG, Pro Neg. Hi

Sharpness +1, Noise Reduction -1, Pro Neg. Hi for natural colors and increased contrast. Exposure to the highlights with a little low-key bias in order to achieve a dramatic in the sky and with the partial sunlight.

Wasserburg am Bodensee

Fujifilm X100T (pre-production), SOOC JPEG (Astia), manually set hyperfocal distance at f/16

Using the camera's built-in RAW converter to change a classic "overexposed" ISO 200 ETTR exposure into something more like ISO 100: pull processing by -2/3 EV, Sharpness +1, Noise Reduction -1, Shadow Tone +1, Highlight Tone +1

Wasserburg am Bodensee

Fujifilm X100T (pre-production), RAW / Lightroom 5.6 (Pro Neg. Hi), hyperfocal distance at f/16

This is the original (uncorrected) "classic" ETTR exposure at base ISO 200: histogram leans to the right without clipping any highlights, resulting in a less noisy but overexposed looking image

Meersburg am Bodensee

Fujifilm X100T (pre-production) & WCL-X100, SOOC JPEG (Velvia)

Using Velvia to add some color to a very dull day. Even the sky looks blueish, although in reality, it was completely overcast and rainy. Sharpness +1, Noise Reduction -1
