I've said this elsewhere, but this basic style of bike* is being replicated now somewhat by the better frame builders, albeit with disc brakes and slightly wider tire clearances, because it WORKED. They're phenominal little chameleons that can pull off many different kinds of duties extremely well.
* = similar geometry, rigid tail, frame drilled for racks and fenders, steel or aluminum construction, simplified gearing aimed at the lower end to clumb hills, flat bar instead of drops, etc.
