i know and love both lenses. they are two of the best and the 35 is my personal favorite at that focal legnth. however, being a longtime (from ep1) m4/3 user, i know it is very hard to focus large heavy lenses like these on small m4/3 cameras, and virtually impossible without an external vf. apologies in advance, and perhaps its my monitor or my aging eyes, but what i see is several off focus shots. if that is in fact the case, might i suggest either the evf ( the evf 4 is very good) or something in the omd line with 5 axis ibis and built in vf.
 
The 85/1.4 has a broken aperture mechanism, and it is always used wide open. It is very possible for the focus point to shift slightly
during the focusing, and then the image will look soft. When the focusing is correct, the lens is very sharp. Maybe I should use the external VF!
Children do not sit still, which makes it even more challenging to get sharp images. I make things extra difficult on myself by using the slowest ISO even at sunset. I sacrifice sharpness for better colors. I did not edit. I included all images.
 
yes, the evf is extremely helpful with large lenses like these. it is just not possible to have good form without being able to brace the camera properly. moreso when shooting portrait lenses at 1.4, where the DOF is so thin its like shooting a 50mm at 1.0. there just isnt any margin for error. ibis would be very helpful too.
 
is there any way to fix the aperture arm on your lens? it has a different character stopped down. when i had it i shot most portraits at f4 give or take, and the bokeh was beautifully creamy smooth.
 
It was working well for years, but then it broke. I sent the lens to DAG and others, but they each told me they needed spare parts that they could not get. The 35/1.4 is still working well.
 
thats a shame, for such a superb lens to just break down. but i guess stuff breaks...i wonder if the spare parts could be garnered from other similar, less expensive lenses...
 
I need some person with the know-how and the parts! That man in Japan (who adapts almost any lens) adds his own aperture blades. Who knows? The other alternative is to buy a C/Y 85/1.4 or even a Rokinon 85/1.4.
